Laser treatment for Skin Conditions

Acne Treatment

The Nd: YAG 1064 laser is extremely effective in the treatment of acne and acne scarring. It is a well tolerated, safe treatment that produces long-term results with no side effects. The reason that the Nd: YAG laser is so successful in treating acne is because the laser light has the ability to penetrate deep into the skin to selectively destroy overactive sebaceous glands and reduce acne inflammation.

In addition to its thermal penetration effects, the Nd: YAG also accelerates the healing process and stimulates collagen remodeling, an important step in the long term treatment of acne. This helps fill in and smooth out acne scarring.

Acne Results

Results can vary due to individual factors which may require more than one treatment, however, laser acne therapy can also act as a preventative treatment by helping to stimulate collagen and keep scars from forming, as well as treating the active bacteria in the pores to help reduce acne and keep it from developing.

Not only is the Nd: YAG laser an incredibly effective, safe, and first-line treatment for acne, it is also a results oriented treatment for vascular lesions and uneven pigmentation such as spider veins, hemangiomas, port wine stains, and a variety of other vascular conditions including rosacea.

Acne FAQs

Acne vulgaris is a skin condition characterized by papules, pustules, blackheads, and sometimes deep cystic lesions that can cause scarring. Acne occurs when hair follicles (sebaceous glands) are clogged with bacteria, oil, and dead skin cells. The most common areas that acne is found is the face, neck, and upper torso.

Luckily, there are many forms of treatment that successfully reduce and often “cure” acne. The benefits of treatment with the Nd: YAG laser is that it is able to selectively and accurately target overactive sebaceous glands deep in the skin, while the thermal energy treats scarring and smoothes the skin.

Significant results can be seen with a single treatment and often the area is almost entirely cleared of acne inflammation. However, the amount of treatments needed can vary due to individual factors. Once the acne is cleared, patients typically achieve long term results.

The laser treatment is actually very tolerable! Treatments are typically done with only mild discomfort. A beneficial quality of lasers is that treatments are very quick, usually 20 minutes or less.

For someone who is treating the skin for the first time or is more sensitive to pain, we offer the option of a topical anesthetic to make the treatment more comfortable.

Typically, only a single treatment is needed to significantly reduce or clear mild to moderate acne inflammation. The number of treatments needed as well as how often they should be performed varies between people.

In multiple case studies and in our experience, there have been no observed side effects. Immediately after treatment, there may be mild redness in the area, which fades within one day.

Rosacea Treatment

The Nd: YAG laser has a significant effect on the vascular lesions found on the face which often accompany rosacea, producing temporary, minimal side effects. The Nd: YAG laser targets the pigment in the small broken blood vessels and the flushing present in the skin to thermally destroy them, causing the redness to disperse and fade. Blood vessels and overall facial redness is significantly, if not almost completely, reduced.

Rosacea FAQs

Rosacea is a chronic skin disorder characterized by facial flushing, persistent erythema, telangiectasia (small spider veins), and inflammatory papules and pustules affecting the central part of the face.

Unfortunately no. However, laser treatments can dramatically change the appearance of the skin and ultimately reduce facial redness. The laser is able to selectively treat the tiny veins known as telangiectasia (a precursor to rosacea). By treating the tiny veins and cauterizing the blood vessels, it decreases the redness, pore size, and overall inflammation.

Yes and no. There are prescription medications to help with the early to late stages in the progression of the condition. However, the medications are unable to change or reverse any of the progression that has already taken place. The benefit of the laser is that it is capable of changing the actual appearance of the skin’s texture and to some extent reverse the damage that has been done.

While skin redness may be reduced in a single treatment, most individuals require between 2-4 treatments to achieve the desired results. People with more telangiectasia may require additional treatments in order to treat all the small veins. By doing so, you will be able to achieve more long term results.

It is important to remember that there is no cure for rosacea, but laser treatments can produce impressive results in the reduction of overall facial redness and irritation. It should be noted that while laser treatments are very significant in making visual changes quickly, laser treatments will be needed to maintain the appearance of the skin.

Surprisingly, the laser treatment is very tolerable! Usually, if the skin is more inflamed before the treatment or if there is a larger number of tiny broken capillaries present, the treatment may be a bit more intense. A beneficial quality of lasers is that treatments are very quick, usually only 20 minutes or less.

For someone who is treating the skin for the first time or is more sensitive to pain, we offer the option of a topical anesthetic that can be applied to the area to make the treatment more comfortable.

In multiple case studies and in our experience, there have been no observed side effects. Immediately after treatment, there may be mild redness in the area, which fades within one day.

The amount of treatments needed as well as how often they should be performed varies based on each individual’s specific needs.

Typically, it is most common to complete a series of 4 treatments every 3-4 weeks apart when first beginning. After 4 treatments, it is for you to determine the best maintenance schedule. Mainly, it is about recognizing what triggers cause the flare ups so they can be avoided and treatments can be minimized.
